Boomers drop rubber match 4-2

The Schaumburg Boomers dropped Thursday's rubber match of a three-game home series 4-2 to the Southern Illinois Miners.

Michael Earley hit a 2-run homer with 2 outs in the top of the first off Schaumburg starter Eddie Cody to hand the Miners an early 2-0 lead. Cody worked 6 innings and struck out 7 but suffered the loss. The Boomers had chances in every inning but stranded 12 men on base in the loss. Southern Illinois led 3-0 before Schaumburg scored twice in the bottom of the eighth. Robby Spencer collected an RBI double for his first professional hit and Craig Massey knocked home a run with a single. Alexi Colon tallied two hits and reached base four times.

The Boomers (29-40) welcome the Washington Wild Things on Friday night for a 6:30 p.m. contest featuring postgame fireworks on "Star Wars" Night. LHP Peter Gehle (2-4, 5.65) is slated to start for Schaumburg against RHP Luke Wilkins (5-3, 3.19).
