Construction to begin on 2 Algonquin developments before next summer

Construction on two new developments in Algonquin will be underway by next summer, officials said.

The village board Tuesday approved the final plans for a Dunkin' Donuts shop to be built at 1319 E. Algonquin Road. Trustees also gave Sleep Number representatives the green light to build a retail store in the Algonquin Galleria.

"I think they're both great additions to Algonquin," Village President John Schmitt said.

Dunkin' Donuts will begin construction on the new location next spring, said Community Development Director Russell Farnum. The 2,115-square-foot shop would include a drive-through and an outdoor seating area.

To provide additional transportation options, the site will also provide a connection to the sidewalk path that runs along Algonquin Road, said Senior Planner Ben Mason.

In the past, he said, the village has asked that developers install bike racks near establishments that can be accessed by bicycle.

"If there's a possibility that bicyclists might want to go there, we might consider that here," Mason said.

Developers also have the option to expand the building by 1,970 square feet, which could occupy two to three additional tenants, Mason said. The property is an outlot of the Jewel shopping center.

Trustee Debby Sosine said last week residents have been asking her about the new coffee and doughnut shop and are excited to see the development take shape.

"(The plans) look great," Schmitt said. "I'm excited to see all this activity on the east side."

The new Sleep Number, at 1531 South Randall Road, would be a free-standing 4,000-square-foot retail store. Construction on that building could begin as early as this fall, Farnum said.

"These users are making an investment in the community," Mason said. "The village is pleased to have new development activity."
