St. Matthew set to host 25th annual pig roast

St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School, on Old McHenry Road between Quentin and Midlothian roads in Hawthorn Woods, will host its 25th annual Pig Roast on Sunday, Aug. 9.

What began with two pigs, and a small group of women who had been asked if they might be interested in having a pig roast, has grown into a festival that roasts 14 pigs and feeds 1,600 guests, organizers said.

"It brings a lot of people into our community," said Delores Crisara, chairwoman of the Pig Roast. "We have people come from all over; last year there was even a man from Montana."

The event will again prepare and serve a meal of roast pork, German potato salad, baked beans, applesauce and hot, buttered sweet corn. Culver's Ice Cream will be on the midway with their ice cream cones and turtle sundaes. Hot dogs, ice tea, soda, wine and beer will also be available for an additional cost.

The Alpiner musicians will return to provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon. In addition to the midway games, Bob Hirsch, Balloon Master, will be entertaining all with his balloon creations.

"Clowning Around," starring Rick Colon, will also be on the midway with his comedy and magic, and there will be face painting and a spacewalk for children. And of course, there will be the ever-popular bingo.

"People like to just come to the Pig Roast to be together, to relax, and to have a good time," Crisara said.

Admission is $14 for adults and $5 for children 4 through 10. Children under 4 are free. Food will be served from noon to 5 p.m.
