Wood Dale man killed in festival tent crash

A Wood Dale man was killed and 20 others were injured when a large tent was blown into the air, then crashed down to the ground and on top of its occupants Sunday afternoon at the Prairie Fest in Wood Dale. The injuries occurred about 2:35 p.m. as a powerful storm with high winds and hail swept through the area, said Wood Dale Deputy Police Chief Mike Rivas. The tent hosted the live music performances that are a centerpiece of the four-day festival, located at Wood Dale Junior High School, 655 N. Wood Dale Road. "Everybody started screaming, and we saw people falling," said witness Bella Salgado. "It was really, really scary." Full story.

Tornado reported in Grayslake

Another round severe storms swept through the area Sunday night, packing high winds, rain and hail that toppled trees and power lines, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. National Weather Service Meteorologist Ricky Castro said there were reports that a tornado touched down near Grayslake. Full story.

Rosemont softball dome collapses

Rosemont's indoor softball dome collapsed Sunday afternoon as a result of a fast-moving thunderstorm, officials said. "The dome is down," said village spokesman Gary Mack. "Our public safety personnel believe it's directly attributable to the weather and there may have been a microburst even that took it down." Full story.

Tornado reported in Grayslake

Body found in lake identified as Carol Stream woman

The body recovered near the Indiana Dunes State Park has been identified as missing Carol Stream resident Chase Froese, officials said Sunday. Just before noon on Sunday, the Porter Volunteer Fire Department Dive Rescue team recovered the body, which was spotted about 250 yards off the shore by a Lake County Sheriff's Department helicopter, said the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement District 10. Froese's cause of death is believed to be accidental drowning, officials said. Froese was a student in the class of 2017 at Calvin College, a Christian liberal arts college in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a 2013 graduate of Wheaton Academy in West Chicago. Full story.

Before Sunday afternoon's game, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said it was a relief to see starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija remain on the roster. Much of Ventura's opinion was based on Samardzija's recent run of success, including 10 straight starts pitching 7 or more innings - the longest streak in the major leagues this season.
