Schaumburg police shooting still under review Monday

A 31-year-old Schaumburg woman who opened fire on police during a standoff Saturday night continued to recover in the hospital Monday after being struck twice by return fire.

Meanwhile, the separate investigations of both her actions and the police response remained in the preliminary stages Monday. No charges have been filed.

But the Cook County state's attorney's office could bring charges against Tamekka Broyles of the 1700 block of Maple Place in Schaumburg as early as Tuesday, Schaumburg police Lt. Shawn Green said.

Broyles suffered nonlife-threatening gunshot wounds to her arm and shoulder during the exchange of gunfire that ended a more than four-hour standoff at her condo unit late Saturday.

"She's doing OK," Green said Monday.

Police said the standoff began at 7:25 p.m. Saturday, when Broyles' roommate texted 911, writing that Broyles was inside their condominium holding a pistol and talking about killing herself.

Police said the first officers arrived to find Broyles sitting down inside the residence with a pistol to her head. Officers urged Broyles to put the weapon down, but she refused, police said.

At one point Broyles pointed the gun toward the officers, who quickly left the unit, reports said. She then closed the door and refused to come out.

Schaumburg police called for assistance from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team, which arrived on the scene shortly afterward.

Just before midnight, police said, Broyles fired at least one round out the window of her residence toward a NIPAS vehicle. She then stepped out of the condo unit and shot at NIPAS officers posted in the common hallway, police said.

A NIPAS officer returned fire, and Broyles was struck twice, police said. She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment of her nonlife-threatening wounds.

There were no other injuries reported.

The NIPAS officers involved in the shooting are not members of the Schaumburg Police Department, authorities said.

As per protocol, the officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.

On Monday, that investigation was still in its preliminary stages, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Matt Boerwinkle said.
