Gateway holds off Schaumburg Boomers

SAUGET, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers dropped a 1-run decision to the Gateway Grizzlies on the road by a 5-4 final on Saturday.

Gateway used a pair of 2-run homers to open a 4-0 lead. Schaumburg rallied to within 4-3. Craig Massey connected on a 2-run homer in the fourth and Mike Schulze came across on a wild pitch in the fifth. Gateway added an unearned run in the seventh to tack on some insurance. The Boomers, who left nine on base, loaded the bases in the eighth but scored just 1 run on a bases-loaded walk to TJ Bennett. Schaumburg left the tying run at second in the ninth.

Peter Gehle took the loss, working six innings. Seven individuals posted hits for the Boomers led by a pair from Bennett. Kyle Ruchim and Willi Martin each extended hitting streaks in the contest to 15 and 11.

The Boomers (27-38) and Grizzlies meet again at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday.
