Deerfield bookstore to host local author

Beanstalk Toyland & Bookstore will host a book reading and signing of the new book "Crazy Hair" by local author Jill Rivkin from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 8, in the "Booknook" at Beanstalk, 654 Central Ave., Highland Park.

Rivkin is a resident of Deerfield and passionate about her first book. "Crazy Hair" encourages children and adults alike to embrace their quirks and differences. The book teaches self-love through the story of a child who faces the challenges of wild, coiled hair.

Pam Hillman, owner of Beanstalk Toyland & Bookstore, said, "I cannot wait to have Jill in the store. She lives right down the road in Deerfield and I think that 'Crazy Hair' stresses such a powerful message of confidence and self-esteem in children."

"Crazy Hair" is a children's book about a little girl with wild and crazy hair that makes her feel self-conscious. But in a fine lesson of confidence, the girl (based on Rivkin's daughter, Meredith) works through the difficult situations with her mother, begins to recognize differences and eventually comes to love her hair.

Rivkin's second book, "It's Just A Potato," is scheduled for a late fall 2015 release. That story will also have a special message for both parents and children, inspired by her son Jacob, a very "particular" eater.

"It will focus on how exploring new foods and trying new things are important. It's an age-old issue for parents," Rivkin said.
