Rand Paul coming to Niles Saturday; Scott Walker in DuPage County soon

Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul is set to be in Niles Saturday afternoon as candidate visits to the area start to become more common.

The DuPage County GOP announced that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker will visit Downers Grove in a couple weeks.

Paul, who recently made news for destroying the federal tax code with a chain saw and setting it on fire in a video posted online, will be at the Royal Kitchen and Bathroom Warehouse, 7530 N. Caldwell Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday to meet with voters and sign copies of his book "Taking a Stand."

The event is free, and the doors open at 2:30 p.m., but people need to register online at eventbrite.com.

Walker is scheduled to appear at Carlucci's Restaurant, located at 1801 Butterfield Road in Downers Grove, at an event that starts at 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 13. The Wisconsin governor has won the praise of Gov. Bruce Rauner and has been toward the top half of presidential polls as the Republican candidates prepare for their first debate soon.

"With hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, DuPage is a great place to start a primary race in our Illinois," DuPage County GOP Chairman Darlene Ruscitti said.

Tickets can be purchased for $100 each online at http://dupagegopsummer.eventbrite.com.

It's unclear what role Illinois will play in the Republican primary race next year because many states' elections fall before the Land of Lincoln's. So the now-crowded race could be mostly over by the time the campaign arrives here.

Still, Illinois could be an important fundraising state for the candidates. And in 2012, Illinois played a role in elevating Mitt Romney to the Republican nomination over Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich.
