Sherman physicians named to top cancer doc list

Elgin, Ill. - Two physicians on staff at Advocate Sherman Hospital have been named as a "Top Cancer Doctor" by Newsweek magazine.

The magazine recently released the list of the nation's top physicians for cancer care in conjunction with Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., which publishes America's Top Doctors.

The list included Dr. John Brems and Dr. Azhar Awan. They were two of 120 Illinois physicians to earn the recognition.

Dr. Brems is the medical director of the Center for Advanced Liver and Pancreatic Care at Sherman Hospital and specializes in the surgical treatment of liver and pancreatic diseases. Over the years, he has performed thousands of liver transplants, major liver resections and liver-heart transplants.

Dr. Awan is the medical director of oncology-radiation at the Cancer Care Center at Sherman Hospital, specializing in treating solid tumors and lymphomas. He is particularly skilled in the treatment of prostate cancer, soft tissue sarcomas and breast cancer.

"It is a privilege to be honored and recognized by my peers for providing excellent care to all my patients on a daily basis," Dr. Awan says. "I don't strive for recognition, but to provide the best radiation-oncology services for my cancer patients, and to work with my surgical and medical oncology colleagues in formulating the best plan of care for each individual patient."

Dr. Brems agrees.

"This honor reflects the quality of care the patients receive at Sherman Hospital," he says. "Cancer care requires a multidisciplinary approach, and this honor reflects the great care of everybody who is involved in the treatment of these patients. It does not reflect one person in particular."

The list was compiled through peer nominations and extensive research Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. has conducted for more than 20 years.
