CLC's Adult Education division awards $7,500 in GED scholarships

Five outstanding Lake County students who completed their GED certificates were honored at a luncheon for 2015 GED Scholarship recipients on July 15, where they were awarded $7,500 in scholarships.

The event was sponsored by CLC and the Lake County Regional Office of Education.

Noel Olivia of Waukegan won the $2,500 Lake County Regional Office of Education scholarship. He plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration and would eventually like to open up a dialysis treatment center in his home country of Honduras.

Maria Macias of Round Lake won the $2,000 Libertyville Woman's Club and CLC Foundation Scholarship. She plans to earn an A.A.S. in Administrative Office Systems and also study mathematics at CLC.

Diana Ramirez of Park City won the $1,000 Lake County Regional Office of Education scholarships. She also plans to pursue a career in Administrative Office Systems.

There were two winners of $1,000 College of Lake County Foundation Scholarships. Laura Rios-Pacheco of Zion wants to study Administrative Office Systems, while Matthew Mellen of Grayslake plans to work on a CLC transfer program in the healthcare field.

Those attending the event included the scholarship recipients and their families; Superintendent Roycealee Wood and staff of the Regional Office of Education; Judy Haga, Libertyville Woman's Club; Karen Schmidt, CLC Foundation; Derrick Harden, CLC President's Office; and other CLC faculty and staff members.

CLC's division of Adult Basic Education, GED and ESL provides educational opportunities to adults who have not acquired a high school diploma. These include Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, General Education Development (GED) classes in English and Spanish and job readiness training.
