Air show a no-go in Waukegan

Logistical problems have been cited by organizers in their cancellation of the Wings Over Waukegan air show that was set for September.

Air show organizer Grant B. Farrell issued a statement through the city this week that said it was with a “heavy heart” the Wings Over Waukegan board of directors decided the show could not go on Sept. 12-13.

It would have been the 14th consecutive show at Waukegan National Airport on McAree Road if it had gone on as scheduled. Adult tickets for each day would have cost $15, with uniformed military personnel and children younger than 12 free.

“This cancellation is due to the fact that we were unable to meet our financial obligations to allow us to move forward and successfully produce a safe and enjoyable show this year,” Farrell said. “This was compounded by the fact that there were certain logistical issues related to relocating some neighbors that border the airport that live in the (Federal Aviation Administration) mandated flight box that we were unable to overcome.”

Waukegan Mayor Wayne Motley issued a statement with his reaction Thursday.

“I am disappointed and dismayed. This year's event would have meant a significant amount of revenue and goodwill for the city of Waukegan and for Lake County,” Motley said.

Farrell said he intends to return with a retooled show in 2016.

Organizers had projected about 15,000 spectators for each four-hour show this year. Similar to other years, the 2015 edition would have had soft drinks and food available for purchase on the premises.

Last year's Wings over Waukegan show was for one day and ran three hours. It featured classic warbirds and military aircraft performing stunts.
