Des Plaines brothers facing drug charges

Two Des Plaines brothers are among 24 people from the Chicago area facing federal drug charges following a nearly three-year, multijurisdictional investigation.

Luis Antonio Cruz, 48, and his brother, Carlos Alberto Cruz-Carrera, 42, are accused of running a narcotics operation that moved large quantities of cocaine and heroin throughout the Chicago area and into Wisconsin, federal prosecutors said.

Cruz is accused of heading the distribution operation, while his young brother is accused of assisting in the delivery and accounting of the operation.

Prosecutors said 16 of the 24 people charged have been arrested. Luis Antonio Cruz is among those in custody. Authorities believe his brother is in Puerto Rico.

If convicted, the brothers face a maximum prison sentence of life behind bars.
