State American Legion tournament opens in Carol Stream

The Cubs are skidding. The Sox are maybe, just maybe, mounting a comeback.

No matter your loyalties, why not watch a baseball game that won't leave you with your head buried in your hands?

Fans can watch six American Legion teams duke it out for the state title during a four-day tournament in Carol Stream that will crown a champion Saturday. The contenders are Wheaton Post 76; Elgin Post 57; Galesburg Post 285; Northwest Post 690 (Palatine); Mattoon Post 88; and Alton Post 126-Edwardsville 199.

Many of the games feature athletes who left their mark in high school - Wheaton North, Glenbard North, Montini, to name a few - and have the talent to play the sport in college.

And hey, there's beer and concessions, too.

The tournament began with a noon opener Wednesday pitting Elgin against Galesburg.

Games continue at noon, 3:30 p.m. and under the lights at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lee Pfund Stadium at Legion Field, 570 S. Gary Ave., Carol Stream.

Tickets are $7 or $18 for weekend admission for adults and less for kids or Legion members.
