Fast-food workers deserve respect and fair pay
This letter is in response to a letter in the May 28 Daily Herald from Gregory Jacobs about fast-food workers who want fair pay.
At age 69, I work as a support staff for special needs adults who work as garbage collectors, custodial support staff and as dishwashers and food preparers in a company sponsored kitchen. My supervision is very hands on, and I especially have to help collect garbage and wash dishes.
My work leaves me exhausted. But, I've been told the work done by myself and my staff is absolutely essential and that the places we support could not function nearly as well without our support.
Once, I worked with a client who did a shift at a McDonald's. The work was constant, tedious, demanding and done in hot and cramped quarters. I was amazed at how well my client and everyone else worked together for hours without a break.
Because of my own experience, I have nothing but respect for fast-food workers and believe they deserve to be paid well for their efforts.
I can't understand why Gregory Jacobs has to be so nasty to those who have never done him any harm and who wish him no ill will. His bigoted cruelty is a cancer that our society can well do without.
