Schaumburg Boomers falter in homestand opener

The Schaumburg Boomers opened a six-game homestand by dropping a 7-2 contest to the Rockford Aviators on Friday.

Schaumburg staked starter Taylor Thurber a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Schulze led off the game with a single and scored on an RBI single from Craig Massey. Thurber, signed before the game, cruised along into the fifth. With 2 outs, Anthony Renteria connected on a 2-run homer to put Rockford ahead. The Aviators broke the game open with 5 runs in the seventh, chasing Thurber from the game.

Thurber worked into the seventh but was tagged with 6 runs in his debut, suffering the loss. Massey slashed 3 hits in the game as the Boomers finished with 7. Schaumburg also drew 8 walks in the defeat. Evan Boyd and Alan Oaks combined for 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to finish the game. Both struck out 3 with Oaks fanning the side in the ninth.

The Boomers (25-33) continue the series with Rockford on Saturday.
