Sandra Bland investigators: No injuries that indicate a struggle

The autopsy of a Naperville woman who was found dead in a Texas jail revealed no injuries that would suggest she was killed by someone else, authorities said yesterday. Waller County prosecutor Warren Diepraam said the autopsy showed that 28-year-old Sandra Bland had no defensive injuries on her hands that would typically indicate a struggle. The marks around Bland's neck were consistent with a suicide by hanging, Diepraam said. Full story.

Three people struck by cars in downtown Des Plaines

Three people were struck by vehicles in almost the same spot on Miner Street about two hours apart yesterday afternoon in downtown Des Plaines. Two of the victims were in critical condition last night, officials said. The victims include a 69-year-old woman, who was struck at around 1:44 p.m., and two 13-year-old girls, struck near the same spot at 3:51 p.m. Full story.

Person struck, killed by train in Maine Township.

A person was struck and killed by a Metra train Thursday night, according to railway officials. Meg Reille, Metra spokeswoman, said the person was struck by outbound North Central Line Train No. 119. The train came to a full stop near the intersection of Central and Rand roads in unincorporated Maine Township. Full story.

Autopsy today after Arlington Heights man dies in Wisconsin lake

An autopsy will be performed today on the body of an Arlington Heights man who was found dead in Delavan Lake in Wisconsin yesterday morning, officials said. Scott Apel, 49, was out on a boat with some co-workers around 11 p.m. Wednesday when they decided to go for a swim, said police Sgt. Erik Voss of the Delavan, Wisconsin, department. The group was swimming near the boat when Apel went under and his co-workers could not find him. Full story.

Fire damages home in Lake in the Hills

No one was injured in a fire yesterday that damaged a home in Lake in the Hills, authorities said. The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was dispatched at 10:20 a.m. and arrived five minutes later at 1184 Ridgewood Circle, where firefighters found a two-story home with fire and smoke visible through a window on the first floor. Chicago Bandits pitcher Monica Abbott can add another milestone accomplishment to her already impressive resume: She pitched her second perfect game yesterday.
