Sherman West Court to host Elgin Road Race Car Show

Elgin, Ill. - Advocate Sherman West Court will host the Elgin Road Race Car Show and Parade Lap on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The event celebrates the nine Elgin Open Wheel Road Races that took place between 1910 and 1933. It is sponsored by the Fox Valley chapter of Model T Ford Club International.

Previously taking place in late August, the 8.5-mile race often attracted crowds exceeding 50,000, but as car improvements were made and race cars were enhanced, the Elgin races were replaced with races on speedway ovals that fans are accustomed to today.

The races featured legendary drivers Barney Oldfield, Ralph DePalma and Ralph Mulford, to name a few.

Registration for the event will take place at 11 a.m. at Sherman West Court, 1950 W. Larkin Ave.

A raffle will follow at 2 p.m., and a parade lap over the original racecourse, which is now all city streets, is set for 3:30 p.m.

All makes and models are welcome to attend the event, and it is free to all spectators.
