Streamwood Summer Celebration opens Friday

The annual Streamwood Summer Celebration, featuring carnival rides, entertainment, food, a business expo, bingo, and main stage bands such as Maggie Speaks, 7th Heaven and The Cavern Beat, will open Friday, July 24, and run through Sunday, July 26.

Community partners putting on the festival - the village, park district and chamber of commerce - expect more than 10,000 people to attend the event in Hoosier Park, 700 W. Irving Park Road.

The theme of the festival parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday is "Christmas in July." The parade begins at Bartlett Road and Streamwood Boulevard and proceeds west on Streamwood Boulevard to Hoosier Park. A parking ban will be in effect along Streamwood Boulevard from Oltendorf Road to Madison from 7 a.m. until one hour after the parade concludes. At 9 a.m., East Streamwood Boulevard will be closed from Bartlett Road to Oltendorf Road.

On Sunday, there's a nine-hole golf outing at Streamwood Oaks, 565 Madison Drive, with registration and breakfast. Entry fee is $30, $38 with cart. For information, call (630) 483-1881.

Other events of note at the festival include a local music showcase at 5 p.m. Friday on the children's stage, a paper airplane contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Jesse White Tumblers at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, an ice cream eating contest at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, a hula hoop contest at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and a fire hose spray at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Unlimited carnival ride wristbands are $18 and are good noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A children's craft area is open during most festival hours.

Festival hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Only handicap and permit parking is only on site. Parking, with shuttle bus service every half-hour, is at Park Place, 550 S. Park Blvd.; village hall, 301 E. Irving Park Road; and Streamwood High School, 701 W. Schaumburg Road.

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. R Gang, R&B dance band music from the Motown era into the 21st Century

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. J&T Band, country music and their own versions of rock and pop songs

8:30 to 10:30 p.m. 7th Heaven, renditions of Def Leppard, The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Journey and U2

SUNDAY

3 to 4:30 p.m. FM Stars, top 40 dance, pop and some country

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cavern Beat, music of The Beatles
