More merchandise, deals at Glen Ellyn sidewalk sale

Gone are the easygoing strolls on downtown Glen Ellyn's sidewalks.

This weekend, pedestrians will have to resist the urge to elbow their way through downtown.

That's because of the deals - up to 75 percent off - from shops participating in the annual Sidewalk Sale Celebration.

"We're excited to bring more merchandise to the street, which means more sales, more great priced items as a summer treat," said Carol White, the executive director of the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn, a group co-sponsoring the three-day event with the village's chamber of commerce.

And more hustling shoppers.

"The streets are full," White said, with a stretch of Main Street shut down between Crescent Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue.

To help relax the bargain hunter, organizers also have booked entertainment and healthy activities.

"It's a win-win for the town," White said.

The sidewalk sale continues 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Rise, a fitness studio, will host a free 30-minute yoga class for kids at 9 a.m. Register at riseglenellyn.com, although walk-ins are welcome, too. Run Today, an outfitter for runners, will help kids find sneakers that fit just right from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Then the focus shifts to beauty. Salon Estem will devote two chairs to braiding hair - think more Blake Lively and less Pippi Longstocking - from noon to 4 p.m.

"That was a huge hit" last year, White said.

On the final day, massages will be provided Saturday at the flower clock on south Main Street.
