Elmhurst Travelers Football Club to huddle again
For 40 years, Elmhurst had its own semipro football team.
Some members were former high school, college and even NFL players. They all shared a love of football and a passion to play the competitive, hard-hitting sport.
They were the Elmhurst Travelers, and they will be huddling up once again for the Elmhurst Travelers Football Club Reunion from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 25, in the Elmhurst Historical Museum's Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave., Elmhurst.
The museum is hosting the reunion of former teammates and their families as they gather to share stories and memorabilia and to reminisce about the Elmhurst Travelers legacy.
The Travelers competed in a regional semipro football league against teams from Chicago, Aurora and southern Wisconsin from 1927 to 1967. They became known as tough competitors and had an impressive record over 38 playing seasons, with 292 wins, 80 losses and 30 ties. The team was coached by one of the original organizers, former Elmhurst resident George Kulton, who was inducted into the Semipro Football Hall of Fame in Mobile, Ala.
Elmhurst Travelers players and their families from any era are welcome to attend the reunion, and the public is encouraged to come and find out more about this legendary Elmhurst team. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. Brief remarks will be made at 3 p.m.
This event takes place in connection with the Elmhurst Historical Museum's current exhibit, "Pigskin Peanuts," a traveling exhibit organized by the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California. The exhibit explores the football-themed comic strips created by Schulz and is open at Elmhurst Historical Museum through Sunday, Aug. 9.
