New Rabbi joins Lindenhurst synagogue

The Am Echod Lindenhurst Synagogue has named Rabbi Julie Pelc Adler as its new rabbi. For details about Am Echod's history as a spiritual home for the Jewish community for more than 100 years, visit www.amechod.org/index.php/about-us/our-history.

Synagogue President Denise Coulter, in announcing the new rabbi, said, "Rabbi Pelc Adler has the ability to instantly connect to our members. She combines a deep spiritual connection to Judaism, which she combines with wit and humanity, which will enhance our congregation's link to our traditions."

Rabbi Pelc Adler received her master's degrees from the University of Judaism and from Harvard Graduate School of Education and was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion.

She coedited the anthology "Joining the Sisterhood: Young Jewish Women Write Their Lives," published by SUNY Press, and has published essays and articles in "Spirituality and Health," "Lilith" and "Reform Judaism Magazine," as well as "The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic," "Midrash and Medicine: Healing Body and Soul in the Jewish Interpretive Tradition," and "Torah Queries: Weekly Commentaries on the Hebrew Bible."

Previously, she served as rabbi of Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living in Glencoe; the director of Jewish Student Life at Santa Monica Community College in Santa Monica, California; and the assistant director of the Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health in Los Angeles. She currently also is the director of the Berit Mila Program of Reform Judaism and NOAM.

She lives in Deerfield with her husband, Rabbi Amitai Adler, and their two young children.
