Meteorologists try to confirm McHenry Co. tornado
The National Weather Service is investigating a report of a possible tornado touchdown in McHenry County, but officials have not yet substantiated the report.
Despite ominous clouds for much of Saturday afternoon, most of the North and Western suburbs received less than 1 inch of rain today, according to the National Weather Service's observed reports.
But the weather service, in later issuing a flash flood warning for Lake and McHenry counties, said Doppler radar and observers indicated that 1 to more than 3 inches of rain fell across much of Lake and northern McHenry counties.
"Runoff from this heavy rainfall will likely continue to result in rises and localized flooding on creeks, streams, and low lying areas," it said. Its warning expired at 10 p.m. Saturday.
Weather conditions improved as the storm system moved east and skies clear. A heat advisory had warned of a heat index as high as 110, but it didn't reach that high as temperatures barely hit the 90s.
The evening forecast called for a 40 percent chance of additional showers and thunderstorms between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The skies will be mostly cloudy with temperatures dropping to as low as 73 degrees.
