Comic Book Mania Convention comes to Elgin

The Gail Borden Public Library's sixth annual Comic Book Mania Convention featured a little bit of everything Saturday in Elgin.

Plenty of people dressed up as their favorite character while winning prizes, browsing through thousands of comics for sale, and enjoying face-painting and taking classes in Comic Book Storytelling.

Ken Seli of Westchester was dressed as Captain America and greeting the crowd as they entered the convention.

Ten-year-old Marianne Mercurio of Bartlett was checking out comics and dressed as Bat Girl. Mercurio said that she loves to read all kinds of comics.

Attendees had photo opportunities with superheroes, and several writers and artists were scheduled to attend, including Jeffrey Moy ("X-Men" and "Star Wars"), Alejandro Rosado (Aw Yeah! Comics!), Jim Nelson ("Magic the Gathering"), and Angel Medina ("Spider-Man").

People could create their own comic with Jim McClain ("Solution Squad" creator), or hear about the "Secret History of Kids Reading Comics" with historian Carol Tilley.
