Benedictine golf outing brings women's great, sports commentator to Cantigny
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to meet a golf legend while playing a great round of golf, then you might want to purchase tickets for the Benedictine University President's Invitational Golf Outing onMonday, July 27 at Cantigny Golf in Wheaton.
Area golf enthusiasts can play a championship course and hear from CBS Sports commentator David Feherty and 10-time major champion Annika Sörenstam - all for a good cause.
Proceeds from the event help provide scholarships for Benedictine students.
Registration and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. Golf begins at 10:30 a.m. Cocktails and photos begin at 4:00 p.m., followed by the program at 6:00 p.m. during which Feherty will interview Sörenstam about her professional career and the world of golf.
Feherty enjoyed a successful professional career with 10 victories worldwide and more than $3 million in prize money. He was a regular on the European Tour with victories including the ICL International, the Italian Open, Scottish Open, South Africa PGA, BMW Open, Cannes Open and Madrid Open. He captained the winning Irish team in the 1990 Alfred Dunhill Cup and played on the European Ryder Cup Team in 1991.
Feherty retired from professional golf in 1997 and began working for CBS Sports. Today, he is heralded as one of the most humorous and insightful commentators in the sport. He has also hosted a self-titled show called "Feherty" on the Golf Channel since 2011.
Sörenstam, widely regarded as the greatest women's golfer in LPGA history, is the only woman to have broken 60 in an official event. During her 15-year Hall of Fame career, she rewrote LPGA and Ladies European Tour record books, won countless awards and changed the way women's golf was played, viewed and covered. She earned 89 worldwide victories, including 72 on the LPGA tour.
Sörenstam was the first and only woman to eclipse the $20 million mark for LPGA career earnings. She was namedAssociated Press Female Athlete of the Year from 2003-05 and is an eight-time Golf Writers Association of America Female Athlete of the Year. She became the first woman in 58 years to compete against men in a PGA Tour event when she played in the 2003 Bank of America Colonial.
In 2008, Sörenstam stepped away from competitive golf to pursue a family and further establish her business brands.
