Advisory through 8 p.m. today: Heat index up to 110

The entire suburban area is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. today.

The weather service warns of temperatures in the low to mid-90s, with a heat index peaking at up to 110 degrees.

"The combination of heat and humidity will create oppressive conditions which may cause heat-related illnesses to develop due to prolonged exposure, particularly the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions," the weather service said.

The weather service recommends scheduling strenuous activities for the early morning or later in the evening, wearing light clothing, and take frequent breaks preferably in air-conditioned settings, or at least shade.

Severe storms with lightning, hail and strong winds moved across northern Illinois, landing in McHenry and some of Kane, Cook and DuPage counties. A severe thunderstorm warning issued for DuPage, Cook and Kane counties expired at 6 p.m.
