Images: #TBT Gallery remembers when St. Charles was world's pickle capital

What's a summer picnic without pickles?

This week's #TBT Gallery focuses on pickles.

Although no pickles were picked or packed in St. Charles, from the early 1960s through 2004, a nonprofit organization called Pickle Packers International (PPI) in the Fox Valley town promoted the green gherkin to cultivate the nation's love of the vegetable.

Currently, the St. Charles History Museum is running a temporary exhibit called, β€œIt's a Big Dill!” through Aug. 6, which covers some of the history β€” and lots of local promotional memorabilia β€” of the crunchy vegetable over the past 4,000 years, including its link to St. Charles.

For more information, visit the museum's website at stcmuseum.org/projects/. For more information on Pickle Packers International, visit ilovepickles.org.
