Venus de Miles ride supports scholarships

The fourth annual Venus de Miles All-Women's Ride comes to Lake County Saturday, July 25.

Venus de Miles is for women of all ages and skill levels, featuring courses to accommodate any active woman, whether this is her first athletic event or hundredth. The noncompetitive fundraiser for Greenhouse Scholars offers 25-mile and 62-mile ride options and an all-new 5K run/walk.

Greenhouse Scholars is a nonprofit organization that supports high-performing college students from low-income backgrounds, the majority of whom are the first generation in their family to attend college.

The organization provides mentors, professional networking opportunities, financial assistance and numerous other resources to help them thrive and succeed in college and beyond. Many Chicago-area individuals and companies support Greenhouse Scholars' programs in various ways throughout the year.

Venus de Miles participants are treated to enviable amenities. The fully supported ride courses include food and drink at rest stops, as well as mechanical and motivational support to keep participants energized along the way.

Once across the finish line in front of the Glen Rowan House on the campus of Lake Forest College, all participants enjoy a complimentary lunch, cocktails and beer, spa services, entertainment and more. There is also the opportunity to connect with current scholars who benefit from the money raised through the event.

The noncompetitive event is a great opportunity for women to give back to the community while enjoying a day of fun and fitness with no pressure. With the new 5K run/walk, women who are unsure about committing to a ride course can participate on foot at their own pace with plenty of time to enjoy the finish line festival.

While not required, fundraising is appreciated. Participants may fundraise individually or as part of a team, with all money going to support the Scholars from Illinois. Awards are given to top fundraisers.

The event is only a success with the support of volunteers from the community. Several opportunities are available for men, women, and groups. Information about volunteering may be found at raceroster.com/events/2015/4308/venus-de-miles-illinois-2015/volunteer.
