Indignation not consistent with facts

While Mundelein resident Charlene Hill may not like Mayor Steve Lenz's remarks, her indignation is not consistent with facts. There is a plethora of research indicating that living in a home with a single or unwed mother is a risk factor that may jeopardize the economic and emotional well-being of children.

The research about the negative impact of alcoholism on children and society at large is also robust. Gay marriage is a new phenomenon, so we do not yet know what its effects will be.

Ms. Hill's views reflect an increasingly popular attitude that is contrary to facts, namely, that an individual's actions have no societal impact and thus should not be judged by others. For better or worse, we are all in this world together, and the decisions that each of us makes benefit or harm not only ourselves, but others as well. As responsible citizens, then, we need to consider more than our personal desires when making choices about our behaviors.
