Readers, meet Grammar Moses

To our readers,

Even before Jim Baumann was named managing editor of the paper almost three years ago, he used to issue treatises on grammar to the newsroom on a regular basis.

Jim's a stickler on grammar, and he also enjoys getting into debates on some of the more obscure rules.

He created his own persona for these memos to the staff - Grammar Moses - and they revealed some of his charm while also prompting considerable newsroom conversation and a few arguments.

(See, Jim isn't the only one in the newsroom who's passionate about proper use of English.)

We were in his office one day talking about the success of the memo, and I asked, why don't we turn it into a column?

The more we thought about the idea, the more we liked it. We know newspaper readers are passionate about grammar, too. We hear from a number of you when there is an error.

You can find his introductory column today here. We hope you enjoy it and that you contribute to it.

And while we hope you don't find a grammatical error in it, if you ever do, we hope you'll care enough about grammar to share your find.

Thanks as always for reading.
