Sulfuric acid poured into clogged drain causes evacuation

Several workers were hospitalized Saturday after someone poured 2-5 gallons of sulfuric acid into a clogged drain at a Mundelein company, causing gas to fill the air.

Mundelein firefighters took six people to two hospitals, while three others refused transportation, the fire department said in a release on Saturday.

The company, the Pet Factory, on the 800 block of East High Street, is a leading manufacturer of rawhide products for dogs.

The 911 call came in at 11:08 a.m., and when firefighters arrived people inside had already evacuated. Several people reported having trouble breathing.

The building was ventilated.
