Roger Federer will have to overcome former champion Andy Murray for a spot in the Wimbledon finals.

The Swiss right-hander, a month shy of his 34th birthday, faces his toughest test of the two-week championships as he tries to win a men's record-extending 18th major. Federer, a seven-time winner at the All England Club, brushed past France's Gilles Simon Wednesday 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. It's the 10th time he's reached the semifinals, and this year he dropped just one set, in a third-round match against Sam Groth, an Australian with the fastest serve in tennis.

In the other semifinal, defending champion Novak Djokovic takes on France's Richard Gasquet, whom he has beaten eleven times in twelve matches. Djokovic dispatched U.S. Open winner Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, while Gasquet ousted French Open winner Stan Wawrinka in five sets 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9. Gasquet had been serving for the match at 5-3 before the Swiss fought back. Both men's semifinals will be played Friday.

The women's semifinals take place Thursday, with Serena Williams of the U.S. and Maria Sharapova of Russia, both former champions, meeting while 2012 finalist Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska faces Spain's Garbine Muguruza.

Movie star Bradley Cooper watched from Federer's box on Court No. 1 as the Swiss dominated Simon from the start. He took the first set in 30 minutes with an ace.

Soon after Federer got broken for 5-5 in the second set, ending a streak of 116 consecutive holds dating back to the first round of Halle, Germany last month, rain started to pour and the players were off for a second time.

Under the roof of Centre Court, which had been shut during the second rain delay, Murray dismantled big-serving Canadian Vasek Pospisil, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, as Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and six-time Wimbledon singles winner Billie Jean King watched from the royal box.

Playing in his eighth straight Wimbledon quarterfinals, Murray's all-court coverage and strong returning proved too much for the unseeded Pospisil. Although the 56th-ranked Canadian had produced 79 aces in the way to his first major quarterfinals spot - more than twice as many as Murray - he only managed nine against the Scot, one of the best returners in the men's game.
