Arlington Heights OKs new Metropolis deal with more money, oversight

Arlington Heights trustees unanimously approved a new agreement with the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre on Monday that will maintain annual subsidies but require more oversight from the village and more transparency from the theater. Mt. Prospect mayor halts angry village board meeting

The issue of Mount Prospect allowing noncitizens to be appointed to police positions is dead. But the outrage of residents at the proposal was still very much alive at Tuesday's village board meeting, which Mayor Arlene Juracek halted temporarily by calling a recess, after audience members at a packed village hall demanded to speak and others decided to speak without asking. Katy's Boutique closing after 50 years in downtown Glen Ellyn

Owner Katy Balabinis has decided to retire and close her Main Street shop, Katy's Boutique, after 50 years in downtown Glen Ellyn. In March, she was diagnosed with her third bout of cancer, and Balabinis hopes to attend the start of a closing sale Thursday between chemo treatments. Full story.

Huntley man charged with striking patron at Rosemont bar

A Huntley man is accused of knocking another man unconscious after an argument early Sunday at Adobe Gilas, a Rosemont bar and restaurant. Martin Romero, 29, was charged with aggravated battery and ordered held on $50,000 bail Tuesday by Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo. Full story.

Crews put out small electrical fire at Schaumburg Panera

Schaumburg firefighters put out a small fire at a restaurant on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Firefighters were called to Panera Bread, 1140 Plaza Drive, around 6:45 p.m. for an electrical fire, Battalion Chief Richard Anderson said. One of the letters in the restaurant's illuminated sign had an electrical short and caught fire, which melted the plastic cover on the sign, Anderson said. The plastic dripped down to the restaurant's awning, which also caught on fire. Full story.

Chicago Cubs come from behind in nightcap to sweep Cardinals

The Chicago Cubs scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday ninth to score a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. The victory gave the Cubs a sweep of a day-night doubleheader. In the afternoon, they beat the Cardinals 7-4. Full story.

Bulls bring back Brooks, set summer roster

A year ago, San Antonio pulled off a rare accomplishment, starting the season with the same roster of players that won the NBA championship the previous spring. The Bulls won't match the no-turnover milestone, but they'll be close. With the news that backup point guard Aaron Brooks agreed to a one-year deal, the Bulls are on target to bring back all of last season's players, except for rookie Bobby Portis likely replacing veteran Nazr Mohammed. California Chrome arrives at Arlington Park

California Chrome landed at Arlington Park on Tuesday. The 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner and Horse of the Year will train at the racetrack ahead of the Arlington Million on Aug. 15. Full story.
