New support group at Sherman Hospital to focus on heart failure

Elgin, Ill. - A new support group at Advocate Sherman Hospital will focus on living with heart failure.

As a part of the support group, participants will learn tips to better manage their heart health, and friends, family members and caregivers are encouraged to attend.

The first meeting will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 in Conference Room C at the hospital, located at 1425 N. Randall Road, Elgin. The topic will be "Learning to Follow a Low-Sodium Diet."

During the meeting, attendees will learn ways to reduce sodium in their diet, sample low sodium snacks and discover tips for dining out.

About 5.1 million people in the U.S. have heart failure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About half of those who develop heart failure die within five years of diagnosis.

Those with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are at a higher risk for heart failure, according to the CDC. Smoking, eating foods high in fat, cholesterol and sodium, not getting enough physical activity, and obesity also increase a person's risk for heart failure.

Registration for the free event is required, and participants also will have the chance to win raffle prizes. A Spanish interpreter also will be available.
