Arlington Heights names new village attorney

Nearly a year after the death of longtime village attorney Jack Siegel, Arlington Heights has named a new lawyer to the job.

Mayor Tom Hayes appointed Mark Burkland, of the Chicago-based firm Holland & Knight, village attorney on Monday with the concurrence of the village board.

"It was a long road to get here," Hayes said of the appointment. "We took our time and came to a wise and educated decision. It's not easy to replace someone like Jack Siegel."

Burkland is the village's first new attorney in a half century. Seigel, who died in September 2014, had served in the role since 1961. He also was village attorney for Schaumburg for more than 50 years, worked with Riverwoods and Evanston, and was on staff at Holland & Knight.

"I'm humbled and honored to be here," Burkland said. "I'm really excited. This is a great place. I love it here and I couldn't be happier."

Burkland has represented public bodies on the state, regional and local level, including work with Chicago Public Schools, the village of La Grange, the Oak Park Park District, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Tollway Highway Authority.

He received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Illinois.

The board also thanked Assistant Village Attorney Robin Ward for her help in leading the village's legal affairs in the interim.
