Cardinals pounce on Cubs miscue

Jon Lester took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Monday night, but the St. Louis Cardinals picked up a hit and 2 unearned runs in the inning on their way to a 6-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The game was delayed by rain in the middle of the eighth inning.

Lester also recorded his first major-league hit, a single off the body of Cardinals starting pitcher John Lackey in the second inning. Lester was 0-for-66 as a batter before getting the hit.

An error by rookie third baseman Kris Bryant opened the door to the 2 St. Louis runs in the seventh. The inning began with Lester striking out Matt Carpenter. The no-hit bid ended when Peralta rocketed the ball toward the third-base bag. Bryant could only knock it down on the backhand.

Things didn't get much better for Bryant when he backhanded Jason Heyward's grounder and tried to throw to second to start a double play. But his throw went into right field for an error.

True to form, the Cardinals pounced.

Yadier Molina hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Wong followed with an RBI single to left field.

The Cardinals added insurance runs in the ninth inning against Edwin Jackson.
