Dist. 15 is letting fox into the hen house

The June 22nd article ("Teachers union head joins District 15 administration") should have been front page news. I am appalled with Superintendent Thompson's temerity stating, "There was no application process ... I asked Lisa Nuss to consider taking the position."

Apparently Thompson made this offer of his own volition as no board discussion took place. One board member, Manjula Sriram, was unaware of this appointment until last week's meeting.

Sounds like a dictator's executive order, which is not new to the current managerial style. Does anyone think this action merits a new contract for Thompson's services through his retirement?

At a quick glance, this action may sound reasonable. However, consider that Lisa Nuss was the long-time president of District 15's teachers' union. She is now joining the administration she previously clashed with in bargaining talks.

Thompson's email stated, "Whether serving as union president or as a district administrator, Nuss is part of the same 'team'." Where is the logic here? It's like locking the wolf in the hen house.

Ms. Nuss' experience as union president does not equate to a human resources background as evidenced by her lack of a current administrative license. Thompson further stated the many people he talked to thought it was a positive move. No doubt these were members of the teacher's union ... most certainly they would see Nuss as someone who will be supportive.

School board and Supt. Thompson: Please do not insult the intelligence of parents and taxpayers by presuming your actions are reasonable and acceptable. The general public, especially the students, deserve better!

A greater level of transparency would exist if more people attended board meetings. Whether or not you have elementary-aged children, the dealings of the board affects each and every parents and taxpayer.
