Concussion symptoms sideline Chicago Cubs catcher Ross

The Cubs' seemingly endless roster shuffle continued Saturday, this time because of injury.

Backup catcher David Ross went on the seven-day concussion disabled list with mild concussion symptoms. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

Ross took a foul ball off the mask Wednesday at New York.

"Each day I've been getting better," he said. "I was a little off a couple days ago. I'm always a little off. It's hard to tell what's normal for me. I had a three-day headache that was going on. I had some nausea and some small symptoms that were going on the day I get hit with the foul ball. I got hit with a backswing the day before.

"It's nice for the seven-day DL. Just the main concern is getting another foul ball. I had that happen a couple years ago and it put me out about two months. I don't want to go through that again."

Ross said he suffered concussions in 2005 and 2013. He was not taking any chances this time.

"Now, I recognize the symptoms that come up: the irritability, the headaches, the fatigue, the little bit of an unsettled stomach that comes when you're riding in the car. I felt a little bit of those symptoms coming on. I talked to the doc yesterday. I did pretty good on my tests. I think the seven-day DL gives me a chance to step back and just make sure everything's all right."

To replace Ross, the Cubs selected the contract of catcher Taylor Teagarden from Class AAA Iowa. Teagarden, 31, has 172 games of major-league experience, with Texas, Baltimore and the Mets. He went to spring training with the Cubs as a nonroster player.

"You never know," he said. "You get a phone call. You play your best down there and keep grinding away. I was lucky enough to get a chance to get called. Very unfortunate for David. I've never played at Wrigley. It's my first go-round with the Cubs, and it's very exciting."

Additional roster moves:

The Cubs officially activated lefty Clayton Richard, who started Saturday night's game against the Marlins.

The moves with Richard and Taylor Teagarden forced the Cubs to make two moves to get them on the 40-man roster. They transferred infielder Tommy La Stella from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. La Stella has been out since April with right-rib-cage inflammation.

The Cubs also designated relief pitcher Gonzalez Germen for assignment.

Soon for Soler?

It's possible outfielder Jorge Soler will come off the disabled list in time for Sunday's series finale with the Marlins. Soler has been rehabbing a sprained left ankle at Class AAA Iowa.

"We're talking about it right now," manager Joe Maddon said. "It could be very, very soon. It's not going to be today. To me it's a matter of him being healthy and he's seeing the ball. What does his timing look like?" Those are the kinds of things you're trying to get from the guys down there."
