Officials: Firework injures four in Elgin

Four people were injured Saturday night when a firework was shot into a crowd near downtown Elgin, according to firefighters.

Elgin Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Michaels said a call came in around 9:42 p.m. reporting injuries near National Street and Wellington Avenue.

Michaels said it appeared a firework was shot into a crowd of about 30 to 40 people.

"Everyone was upset," he said, adding that it took some time to distinguish who was "just upset and scared and who was hurt."

One adult and three minors were injured. Firefighters transported three of the injured to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin. The fourth person was evaluated by paramedics and released to a parent, but Michaels said he believes that person was also later taken to a hospital.

"They were all fairly minor," he said of the injuries. "One woman, she had burns to her face. She was probably the most serious."

Michaels said the city's fireworks display was winding down at the time of the call.

"This firework, to the best of my knowledge, was not part of it," he said.

Michaels said a police investigation is ongoing.
