Don't blame flag for massacre, rioting

As usual, the Democrats have descended into silliness, and the Republicans dutifully follow. They talk as if the Confederate battle flag caused Dylan Roof to massacre those victims in Charlston, S.C.

He murdered nine persons because he rejected the moral law. If we are to blame the symbols and other kinds of influences for his behavior, we have to look at popular culture.

Pop-culture overtly rejects the moral law. It claims the moral law changes with the needs of the moment or with the vagaries of personal choice. It is obviously no coincidence that the murders happened in a church, against devout Christians. Pop-culture stands as an enemy of Christianity. It constitutes the major formative influence on most persons and, certainly, the most vulnerable in this society, such as Roof.

Democrats control pop-culture. They control the symbols by which values are created and nurtured. They control the dominant narrative by which readers understand the news and historical events.

The censorship of the Confederate flag and other such symbols will do absolutely nothing to stop the kind of rioting we saw in Ferguson and Baltimore and the inevitable reactions from psychologically vulnerable persons.
