Enjoy a summer picnic at Volkening Heritage Farm

Schaumburg Park District's Volkening Heritage Farm will take visitors back to a 19th century summer day.

Travel back in time and experience the rural community of Schaumburg's youth from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Volkening Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. Interpretive staff will re-enact a typical community picnic during the 19th century in Schaumburg.

"In 1880s Schaumburg there was an event called Old Settler's Picnic, so we decided to bring it back," said Patty Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "It was a fun event, similar to a beer garden, where everyone came to socialize, enjoy food and play games."

The Old Settler's Picnic will feature live music from interpretive volunteers, historic games and farm livestock.

Participants are invited to bring a picnic or purchase a meal at the event. Brats, hot dogs, soft drinks and adult beverages will be available.

Admission is free. For details, call (847) 985-2102 or visit www.parkfun.com.
