Smoldering ashes cause Batavia garage fire

Improperly discarded ashes from a fire pit caused a garage fire Wednesday in the 800 block of Forest Avenue in Batavia, according to the fire department.

The ashes from a Tuesday evening fire had been placed in a paper bag, then placed in the garage. They smoldered, then ignited a nearby garbage can.

A neighbor spotted the fire around 2:49 p.m. through an open garage door. No one was at home.

Fire authorities estimate damage at $5,000 to the building and $1,000 to its contents. Smoke entered the house.

Deputy Chief Randy Banker said ashes from recreational fires, such as those in fire pits, should be kept in the pit and soaked. They should not be placed in combustible containers, and they should not be placed inside buildings.
