Geneva High's French program receives high honor

One of only 10 programs in the nation to be recognized

Geneva High School is one of only 10 schools in the nation to be recognized by the American Association of Teachers of French for its exemplary French program.

The prestigious Exemplary Program with Honors award from AATF recognizes the district's commitment to providing young people with the language skills they need to become effective communicators in a 21st-century economy.

According to the AATF, Geneva's French program stands out by making use of innovative and creative methods in teaching, giving standards-based assessments, and offering numerous cultural activities beyond the classroom. Geneva High School participates in the AATF National French Contest and inducts students into the National French Honor Society, with many honorees annually. Geneva High School also ensures that students profit to the maximum by offering early language learning in middle school and advanced courses, including AP.

The AATF also recognized the Geneva High French faculty for their excellent preparation and steady commitment to professional development.

The local chapter of AATF recently awarded French teacher Pam Cabeen with a chapter award due to the energy, professionalism, and commitment she has displayed throughout her 10-year teaching career in the French language classroom.

Fellow French teacher Martha Behlow received the 2015 Regional Superintendent's Award from the Kane County Regional Office of Education for her innovative approach to language instruction.

The American Association of Teachers of French, founded in 1927, is the largest association of French teachers in the world, with close to 9,000 members. It offers enrichment and support to teachers, and recognizes high achievement in teachers and students.
