Former Stevenson baseball star signs with Boomers

Former Stevenson High School and Northwestern University player Kyle Ruchim has joined the Schaumburg Boomers.

Ruchim, a native of Buffalo Grove, was honorary captain of the Daily Herald's Lake County All-Area Baseball Team in 2010.

Now 22 years old, Ruchim batted .325 with 6 home runs at Northwestern, and may have hit more homers had a shoulder injury not prevented him from playing in 2014.

Primarily a pitcher at Stevenson, Ruchim also set school records in a season for doubles, home runs and RBI. At Northwestern, Ruchim could no longer pitch after hurting his shoulder and played infield and outfield for the Wildcats.

Ruchim was drafted by the Cardinals as a second baseman in the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft, and said he was surprised when no big league team picked him up. He'll try to prove he is healthy enough to play in the major leagues now that he has joined the Boomers.

Ruchim (5-foot-10, 195 pounds, R/R), was signed as an outfielder by the Boomers and made his first appearance for Schaumburg last Thursday, just hours after being signed. Playing left field, Ruchim hit a single and a 2-RBI double in his Frontier League debut.

Schaumburg opens a six-game homestand at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against the Frontier Greys.
