Chicago archbishop has first meeting with Pope Francis

CHICAGO - Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich has met with Pope Francis.

The Archdiocese of Chicago says the two met Friday at the Vatican's guesthouse and the pope's residence. It was their first meeting.

In a written statement released Saturday, Cupich says he thanked the pope for selecting him to lead Chicago's more than 2 million Catholics. Cupich took over from Cardinal Francis George, who died of cancer in April.

Cupich is at the Vatican this week for the Mass where he will receive a pallium, the woolen vestment that popes present to archbishops.
