Lombard group collecting books to fund scholarships

For the 50th year, the Lombard Area American Association of University Women is collecting books for its used book sale.

Proceeds from the sale, which will take place Aug. 5 through 8 at First Church of Lombard, go toward scholarships and grants for women and girls.

In 2014, the organization raised $7,000 through the book sale. Some of the money raised each year is donated to a national AAUW fund, but the remaining is awarded to a local woman hoping to further her education and two students, from Willowbrook High School and Glenbard East, who are about to start college.

Used books can be dropped off starting July 1 in collection barrels at various locations throughout Lombard. The locations include:

• Illinois Cleaners, 200 S. Westmore/Meyers Road.

• Schroeder Ace Hardware, 837 S. Westmore/Meyers Road.

• Ultra Foods, 491 E. Roosevelt Road.

• Sunset Knoll Recreation Center, 820 S. Finley Road.

• First Church of Lombard, 200 S. Main St.

• Walgreens, 309 W. St. Charles Road.

• Walgreens, 225 E. Roosevelt Road.

• and CK Auto Plus, 21W079 Roosevelt Road.

Barrels also will be set up at the two Walgreens in Villa Park, at 10 E. St. Charles Road and 200 E. Roosevelt Road, and at Auto Plus in Addison, at 515 S. Grace St.

Used paperbacks and hardcover books in good condition and commercially made DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs will be accepted until July 31. No textbooks, encyclopedias, VHS videos or Readers Digests will be accepted.

Anyone with large donations can get their books unloaded by volunteers at First Church of Lombard from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on July 24 and July 31 or from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 25 and Aug. 1. People who are unable to drop off books also can contact the Lombard Area AAUW at (630) 495-3978 to arrange for pickup.

The pre-sale, which has a $5 entrance fee, will take place Aug. 5. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7. On the last day of the sale, Aug. 8, a bag of books will be available for $10 from 9 a.m. to noon.

"It's a good bargain," said Lombard Area AAUW member Laurie Driscoll. "We get a lot of recent books that people have read and are donating right away."
