Sensible budget is possible

First, I applaud Gov. Rauner's attempts to instill fiscal responsibility on the various levels of government as well as on government worker pensions.

Second, the present Democrat-run state congress' knowingly passing a state budget for which funds are not available is a reprehensible act.

This is at the core of our problem. What were these politicians thinking, other than "sticking it" to the governor and the citizens of Illinois?

Then when Rauner presents sound, yet tough budget cuts to these same Democrats, the usual cry of outrage is spouted from their mouths. As I read over the list of cuts, they are all sensible, requiring fiscal constraint from all levels of state and local government.

Third, pension plans MUST be changed. I know that those who are presently or soon to be retired have great pensions that were created years ago without foresight as to the future burden placed on the taxpayer. But the burden of future pensions on the taxpayer must be minimized as much as possible so that important programs can be budgeted.

Use of 401(k)s, IRAs, 50/50 contributions to pensions and medical insurance plans and minimizing taxpayer contributions will all help toward the goal of a balanced budget.
