Library Accepts Food for Fines in July

Fines for most overdue books and other library items can be paid with canned and non-perishable food donations from July 1 through July 31 at the Schaumburg Township District Library. This semi-annual "Food for Fines" event takes place at the library's central location in Schaumburg and branch libraries in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park. Items will only count towards fines, and will not be accepted for lost or damaged materials or collection agency fines. Donations will be given to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry.

In addition to canned and non-perishable food items, patrons with overdue items may also bring in hygiene products. The most commonly needed items at the Food Pantry are canned meats, canned pasta, soup, juice, snacks and crackers, baking items, tomato products and paper goods.

Each item counts as 50 cents toward fines, with a maximum of 10 items that may be brought in per visit. Expired food will not be accepted. Each library location will have a bin in which donations may be placed after bringing them to the Check-in-Desk. The next "Food for Fines" event will take place in December.
