Aurora mom, 9-year-old die from crash injuries

An Aurora mother and her 9-year-old son died over the weekend from injuries they sustained June 17 when their SUV crashed into a pond on the far west side of the city.

Maria Ramirez, 31, who was the driver of the 2003 GMC Envoy, was pronounced dead at roughly 11 p.m. Saturday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Her son, Ronaldo Alanis-Ramirez, died just before noon Sunday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Police said the crash occurred just before 5 a.m. when Ramirez was driving out of a parking lot of a business at 1700 N. Edgelawn and collided with a vehicle driven by a 35-year-old Aurora man who was waiting to turn into the same parking lot. Ramirez's SUV continued east after the collision and ended up in the retention pond about 50 yards off shore.

The first police officer on the scene saw Ramirez's 7-year-old daughter, Monserrat Alanis-Ramirez, who also had been in the SUV, trying to stay afloat. He swam to the SUV, which by that point was completely submerged, and with the help of two others who arrived at the scene pulled the girl to shore. Monserrat was treated for nonlife threatening injuries at an Aurora hospital.

An Aurora Fire Department Dive Team was able to pull Ronaldo out of the water around 5:27 a.m. and Maria around 5:40 a.m.

The driver of the other vehicle was treated for nonlife threatening injuries at an Aurora hospital.

Aurora police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to call (630) 256-5330.
