Learn about birds, celebrate summer at museum

The Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Blvd., offers two programs this weekend: "Adventures in the Zoo: Birds of Prey" and "Summer Solstice."

• Join in "Adventures in the Zoo: Birds of Prey" from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20.

Learn about owls, hawks, eagles, and more. Take a look at the museum's avian collection and learn what makes these birds nature's perfect hunter.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Mark Spreyer, executive director of Stillman Nature Center in South Barrington, will be teaching visitors all about the magnificent birds of prey with the help of his live raptors.

The Lords Park Zoo also is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. where many more species await you. Be sure to visit the bison, the elk, the calves and the llama among other animals during this free program in Lords Park. It is sponsored by Friends of the Lords Park Zoo. No registration is required.

• Summer is finally here. From noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 21, join "Summer Solstice," a family event on the longest day of the year. Learn the scientific and cultural facts behind the solstice. What's the relationship between Earth and the sun? Why have people been celebrating this day for so long? Engage in festive activities while getting some fresh air on the first day of summer.
