Check out historic aircraft at Air Classics open house

Air Classics Museum of Aviation will hold its annual open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20.

The event will feature special aviation events and prizes, as well the museum's regular exhibits. Visitors will get an up-close view of museum's aircraft and learn about different aspects of aviation.

Kevin Holley will explain and demonstrate the basic principles of flying control-line aircraft. Veterans from different branches of the services will share their knowledge and experience in military operations from World War II to Vietnam.

Admission to the open house is free.

Speakers and topics include: veteran pilot Chester Sowinski on World War II glider operations, at 10 a.m.; retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Don Cassiday on the Strategic Air Command at 11 a.m.; retired Admiral J.J. Mumaw on naval operations at 1 p.m.; and Vietnam veteran Jim Davidson on life as a crew chief and door gunner on the UH-1H "Huey" helicopter at 2 p.m.

Raffle tickets will be on sale for $3 each and four tickets for $10 for a chance to win some prizes, from a POW/MIA jacket to handmade quilts.

Located one mile west of the Aurora Municipal Airport, entrance at the museum is at 44W546 Route 30, Sugar Grove.

The museum features indoor and outdoor displays of aircraft, equipment, and memorabilia from the 1930s to the present. The Air Classics Museum collection features eight aircraft, including a Vietnam era UH-1H "Huey" helicopter, an A-7E Corsair II that flew in the Gulf War, and an F-4 Phantom II, as well as four full-size replicas, including a P-47 and a BF-109. Aircraft engines and equipment, military uniforms, and model aircraft are also on display, as well as special exhibits honoring the achievements of local veterans.

If you can't make it out for the open house, visit the museum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 22; closed on major holidays. Organized tours for schools and other groups are available on weekdays by appointment. Call (630) 466-0888 for available dates and tour fees.

Regular daily admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and children. Children younger than age 6 are admitted for free when accompanied by their parent. Visit www.airclassicsmuseum.org for details.
